Did you know that in the UK we are increasing the amount of wasted electrical goods we throw away by 5% a year? In 2006 the United Nations Environmental Programme estimated that globally, we’re generating 50 millions tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) annually.
Historically, much of the WEEE ended up in landfill, where toxins within it could cause soil & water contamination. Yuk – that’s doesn’t sound good and it could have a harmful effect on the environment, wildlife and even us!
Ever wondered what this means?
If you’ve recently bought a new electrical or electronic product, you’ll see that it has this symbol on it. Goods are marked with this symbol to show that they were produced after 13th August 2005, and should be disposed of separately from normal household waste so that they can be recycled.
Don’t bin it – recycle it!
Many electrical items that we throw away can be repaired or recycled. Recycling items helps to save our planet’s finite natural resources.
What are we doing about it?
At O2, we’re passionate about the environment, and we’re trying to do our bit to make it as easy as possible for our customers to recycle. That’s why when you buy a new handset, laptop, router or associated electrical accessory from us, we’ll help you recycle your old one. That way, you can be confident that your unwanted product is disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
The UK’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations came into effect in 2006 with the aim to make producers and suppliers of electrical goods pay for the collection, treatment and recovery of waste electrical equipment. It also wants retailers to allow their customers the right to return unwanted items free of charge. O2 has been doing just that for several years.
Solutions for recycling offered by O2
O2 offers our customers free take-back of their WEEE on a like-for-like basis when you buy a new electrical or electronic product. This includes mobile phones, wireless routers, laptops, USB connectors and all associated batteries, chargers and accessories.
O2 donnates cash for every product recycled through our O2 Recycle website to Think Big, a £5 million scheme supporting young people.
Think Big challenges young people to make positive changes in their community. If they've got a great idea, we'll help them get going. We'll give them support, training and funding to make it work.
